島を賑わす可愛い仲間たち
ミヤマホオジロ（Yellow-throated Bunting）**

その名のとおり、白い頬が愛らしい「ホオジロ」。
広い草地や森林に生息することから「ミヤマ（深山）」の名がつきました。
山奥というよりも、人里離れた遠隔地を指すという説もあります。

その姿もさえずりも美しく、
オオルリ、キビタキ、コマドリとともに
古くから「和鳥四品」として人々に愛されてきました。
今もなお、バードウォッチャーを魅了する存在です。

もうすぐ、この小さな旅人たちが春を連れて島にやってきます。
焼尻島の春は、すぐそこまで来ています。

Charming Companions of the Island
Yellow-throated Bunting**

True to its name, the bunting is called hoojiro—“white cheek”—for the pale patch on its face.
The word miyama refers to the wide grasslands and forests where it lives,
sometimes said to mean not deep mountains, but remote places far from villages.

Graceful in both appearance and song,
it has long been cherished in Japan as one of the “Four Elegant Japanese Birds,”
alongside the Blue-and-white Flycatcher, the Narcissus Flycatcher, and the Japanese Robin.
Even today, it remains a favorite among birdwatchers.

Before long, these small travelers will return, bringing spring to the island.
Spring on Yagishiri is just around the corner.
